About the AI Skill Centre
The AI Skill Centre sets, assesses and certifies the standard for AI competence in the UK workplace. We are aiming to certify 10,000 people and 150 organisations in the next 12 months.
Why we exist
Three quarters of UK knowledge workers already use generative AI at work, and 78% of them taught themselves, on their own tools. That is remarkable initiative, and it is unsupported: no shared standard to learn against, no way to prove competence to an employer or client, and no way for an organisation to know where it actually stands.
Industries have solved this before. When navigation went digital, shipping spent two decades building the training, assessment and certification that made the technology safe in professional hands. AI arrived in the workplace in months, not decades, and the competence infrastructure around it simply does not exist yet. Building it, fast, is why the AI Skill Centre exists, and we built it first for mid-size organisations of roughly 50 to 1,000 employees, who face the same AI risks as large enterprises without the in-house capability to manage them, and who move faster when the path is clear.
White paper
Two centuries of evidence says the value of a general-purpose technology flows to its adopters, but only to the adopters whose people can actually use it. Our white paper makes the full case: why the AI race will be won by adopters, not inventors, and why that starts with a skills standard.
Read the white paper →What we do
78 assessable competencies across 10 domains and five levels, from safe everyday use to board-level oversight. Published in full at aiskillcentre.com/standard so anyone can reference it and any organisation can adopt and build on it.
Read the standard →The three minute self-assessment, every knowledge profile, every personalised syllabus and the entire learning library are free for everyone, always. A national benchmark only works if the whole workforce can reach it, so the route to the standard costs nothing.
Take the self-assessment →Scenario-based assessments under controlled conditions, independent of any vendor, product or model, and independent of how a candidate trained. Every current certificate is listed on a public register that any employer, insurer or client can check in seconds.
Verify a certificate →Independence
We are an independent, industry-funded certification body. We sell no AI tools, take no vendor sponsorship for certification and assess every candidate the same way whether they trained with our library, another provider or on the job. Recall of definitions earns little in our assessments; recognising what a real workplace situation demands earns much.
The same discipline applies to organisations. The Certified Workforce mark is awarded against published thresholds, held for 12 months and renewed through an annual certification return signed by a named Governance Lead. Everything we certify can be verified by anyone, live, on the public register, which is the only kind of trust worth offering.
Vendor-independent
We assess against a published open standard, not against any product, model or provider.
Publicly verifiable
Every live certificate appears on the public register. Anyone can check validity and expiry in seconds.
Scenario-based
Assessments test what a situation demands, not recall of definitions. Passing requires genuine competence.
Annual renewal
Certificates expire after 12 months. AI moves fast; the standard moves with it.
The mission
That is the target we have set ourselves, and it is deliberately public. Every certificate on the register is one more person holding the adoption advantage, and every accredited organisation sets the benchmark its sector gets measured against. Our long-term ambition is simple: an AISC certificate as ordinary, and as expected, as a driving licence.
